Creative Carwyn Becomes A Pottery Perfectionist!

The winning combination of quick learning and boundless enthusiasm has turned novice potter Carwyn into a budding pro.

Carwyn dabbled in clay work at school but recently started learning pottery properly at the Maesteilo hub.

Guided by Activity Hub Manager Karen Jeffreys, Carwyn has got comfortable behind the potter’s wheel and discovered he’s a natural.

So much so that Karen predicts he could take on all comers at The Great Pottery Throwdown if he continues improving.

Karen said: “Every week, Carwyn comes to have a one-to-one pottery session, and I’ve been so impressed by his dedication and focus.

“He’s made a cereal bowl, mug and large bowl, and his knowledge and skills improve every session.

“What’s great about Carwyn is that he’ll have a go at anything and gives it all his attention.”

During the sessions, Carwyn has turned pots and glazed the pieces he produced.

Karen says that when she shows him a new skill, Carwyn is very quick to pick it up.

Karen added: “I showed Carwyn how to make the handle for his mug, which is not an easy job.

“He watched what I did and then did exactly the same without the need for any prompting. I couldn’t believe how quickly he picked it up.

“I always have a plan for the sessions, but Carwyn will often come in with his own ideas.

“Not only is he turning out to be a good potter, but he’s a dab hand at design.

“Carwyn is a perfectionist, so he’ll push himself, but he finds pottery quite relaxing.

“It’s wonderful to see the joy it brings him.”
