Revellers In Swanton North East hit the dancefloor in neon fashions this spring as we threw our first-ever rave.
The organisers in the region wanted to bring people supported in the services together to embody the theme ‘Express Yourself’ in a safe space.
There were glow sticks, neon outfits, beads, accessories and all manner of fun items for the partygoers to play with during the festivities.
Dance music pumped out from the DJ deck as everybody had a brilliant time doing their thing.
One of the organisers, Jan Collins from The Cedars, said the event was everything they’d hoped.
Jan said: “What a fantastic time we all had at Swanton’s first-ever rave!
“We all struggle with our sense of self from time to time, so we wanted to create an event where everybody felt free to have fun, be their authentic selves and feel accepted by those around them.
“As well as the fun of the dancefloor, dressing up and buffet, we also had lots of affirmations and mental health information at the event.
“We hope it helped the people we support and our colleagues to feel accepted and empowered.”
The event was also a fundraiser, as the group sourced donations from local businesses for the tombola.
After the event, organisers were able to hand over £250 to Sunderland MIND, who provide vital mental health support in the region.
Jan added: “It’s great to know we held a positive event that can continue to have a positive impact by funding MIND’s work in the local area.
“We’re proud of how much the people we support and our colleagues engaged with the serious message behind the event, and we hope to host another party very soon.”
