For Laura Jenkins, Support Worker with Swanton Community Services West Wales, the past two decades have been defined by consistent, compassionate support and the meaningful relationships she has built with the people she supports, their families and her colleagues. Over more than 20 years, Laura has played a steady and trusted role in helping people live with confidence, dignity and independence.
Laura’s journey began after spotting a job advert in a local newspaper and deciding it might be a welcome change. Two decades later, she says the reason she’s stayed is simple — the people around her.
“I think I’ve been extremely lucky over the years and have always had a really strong work team,” Laura says.
One moment that has stayed with Laura came at a time of reflection, when she truly saw the impact of the support she and her colleagues provide.
“At the funeral of a person we supported, hearing how much of a difference we’d made to his life really hit home. He’d never had holidays, trips to the zoo or days out before living with us. His family were so grateful, and it showed just how much of a positive impact our work can have.”
Laura is particularly proud of the role she has played in supporting people to build confidence and independence over time, and of the difference that compassionate, patient support can make. She recalls one person who moved into our Oak Tree service.
“They had been fed by their previous staff team. By chatting with them and encouraging them to eat and drink independently, they gained the confidence to do it themselves and haven’t looked back since.”
For Laura, the most rewarding moments are often the quietest ones.
“When I start a shift, there’s usually a smiling face pleased to see me — often with a hug. I love seeing people overcome their insecurities and grow in confidence with everyday tasks through the support we give.”
When offering advice to those new to care, Laura is honest about both the challenges and the rewards.
“You have to take the rough with the smooth. Some days are challenging, but the next day you can brighten someone’s day just by being there and talking with them. It’s the little things that count. Building a solid relationship with families is important too — they’re trusting you with their loved one.”
After more than 20 years in care, Laura says what keeps her motivated is simple.
“I just enjoy my job. I enjoy working with the people we support and the team. It’s had its ups and downs, but I’ve always felt supported by the team and managers.”
Thank you, Laura, for over 20 years of dedication, compassion and commitment, and for the difference you continue to make every day across Swanton Community Services West Wales.
