A New Chapter Begins in SCS Suffolk with the First Tenants’ Coffee Morning

There was a real sense of excitement at SCS Suffolk as people supported came together for their very first Tenants’ Coffee Morning — a new initiative designed to build connection, confidence, and provide a space where everyone’s voice can be heard.

The first session focused on getting to know one another, building comfort and confidence, and easing into open conversation — creating a relaxed foundation for what’s to come. In future meetings, people we support will have more opportunities to shape themes, share feedback, and raise topics that matter to them.

The meeting was led by Adam, a person we support, who proudly took on the role of Chair. Registered Manager Vicky Cole will meet with him ahead of each session to explore ideas, plan discussion topics, and decide on activities together. Adam will also design the event posters — a brilliant example of empowerment and leadership in action.

“Adam’s been brilliant,” Vicky said. “He gathers ideas from staff but also uses the role to share his own experiences and feedback.”

Inclusivity was at the centre of the first session. To support different communication and sensory needs, the team introduced smiley and sad face cue cards to help people express their views easily. Some attendees preferred to join the activities but skipped the karaoke entertainment — so future sessions will reflect this choice. Every person was invited to participate in a way that felt right for them.

For this get-together, both staff and people we support were encouraged to get involved with baking and bring their creations to our bake-off! Alfie was the star baker, taking home a £20 Amazon voucher!

Even in its early stages, the impact has been positive. People who previously found groups overwhelming have already started to attend more and interact with others.

Vicky reflected, “These meetings — alongside other social gatherings — have helped people meet new friends and feel more comfortable in group spaces.”

One of the most meaningful discussions centred on the right to say “no”. This topic was prompted by a recent situation where two people felt unable to refuse a request. The conversation was empowering, especially for one person directly involved who proudly shared how good it felt to be able to say no — and the room shared in that moment with her.

“Support workers play such an important role,” Vicky said. “Understanding rights and choice is essential, and these meetings help us explore that together in a positive way.”

Staff shared valuable learning from the session — recognising the importance of planning, structure and clear purpose to help everyone feel engaged and confident. Managers and team leaders were present at each table, supporting those who needed help to speak or express views and ensuring every voice was heard.

The Coffee Morning is already becoming a safe, warm space for people we support, staff and management to connect, laugh, talk and learn together. “It’s a safe, respectful place for shared experiences — and fun too,” Vicky added.

This first gathering marks the start of something meaningful — a growing community built on empowerment, inclusion and shared conversation. And it’s only just beginning.
