A Remarkable Journey of Growth and Confidence at Millie’s House

At Millie’s House, a heartwarming story of progress and perseverance has unfolded. Just a week ago, a child we support was unable to move — and today, they’re taking steps towards walking. It’s a moment filled with pride, joy, and a deep sense of hope for everyone involved.

For Registered Manager, Sarah Lonergan, and her team, it’s a moment that truly reflects the dedication, care, and belief that shape daily life at Millie’s House. We caught up with Sarah to hear all about it.

“This child spent over a year in hospital following what began as a routine appointment and never left,” Sarah explained. “They were fit for discharge but had no suitable home to go to. From the moment we learned about their story, we knew we wanted to create a place where they could feel safe, supported, and encouraged to flourish.”

From the day they arrived, the team recognised their determination and made early referrals for occupational therapy and physiotherapy to help them reach their full potential. Sarah said that spark of resilience was clear from the start.

“Even though they had faced such a long and uncertain journey, there was a real strength and curiosity in their eyes. We knew that with the right support, patience, and encouragement, they could achieve incredible things.”

The first signs of movement brought a wave of emotion throughout Millie’s.

“We were completely overjoyed — everyone was cheering and smiling,” Sarah recalled. “It was such a powerful moment to witness. You could feel how proud everyone was — not just for the progress itself, but for what it represented: hope, resilience, and the amazing things that can happen when you never give up.”

When the child first joined Millie’s House in June, they were shy, overwhelmed, and unsure of their surroundings. But with patient care, consistency, and encouragement from the team and other children, they’ve blossomed into a confident, happy child who loves to laugh, play, and embrace new adventures.

“Now we see this joyful, confident child who lights up the room,” Sarah said. “It’s hard to believe that just a short time ago they were so unsure and withdrawn. Every day they seem to discover a little more strength and joy — and that’s what it’s all about.”

For Sarah and her team, moments like this reaffirm everything they believe in.

“It shows us all what’s possible,” she said. “At Millie’s House, we have a ‘can and will’ attitude — we truly believe that every child has potential, no matter how complex their needs may be. I’m so proud of both the children and the staff for the love, energy, and commitment they bring every single day.”

The next goal is to continue building leg strength and independence, with plenty of encouragement along the way.

“There’s no reason they can’t learn to walk unsupported in time,” Sarah added. “It’s not just a dream — it’s a plan, and we’ll be right there beside them every step of the way.”

For Sarah, this kind of progress isn’t just professional — it’s deeply personal.

“This is something I proudly share with my own loved ones,” she said. “Over the years, my children have grown up hearing about the incredible journeys of the children at Millie’s House. They celebrate their successes just as much as I do. This isn’t just a job — it’s something far more special. It’s a privilege to be part of these children’s lives and to witness the moments that truly change everything.”

Interim Managing Director, Pete Hylton, also shared his pride in the team’s dedication and the child’s incredible progress:

“This story is a beautiful example of what makes Courtyard so special — the belief that every child has potential and that with the right care and support, truly life-changing things can happen,” Pete said. “I’m incredibly proud of Sarah and the team at Millie’s House for their unwavering commitment, compassion, and belief in what’s possible. Stories like this remind us all why we do what we do.”
