There was plenty of excitement as John and Jamie set off for a holiday to Butlin’s Minehead, ready to explore the resort, have fun and make memories together. For John, the trip was especially significant as it marked his first holiday since joining Swanton.
Supported by our Community Services in Telford, John and Jamie recently began sharing a bungalow, and as they got to know one another, their friendship continued to grow.
“It was lovely to see their friendship develop naturally,” said Support Worker Shell. “We could see how much they enjoyed spending time together, so we thought a holiday would be the perfect opportunity for them to make even more memories.”
The excitement started well before they packed their bags. In the weeks leading up to the trip, staff helped John and Jamie prepare with holiday countdowns and regular chats about everything they were looking forward to.
“The countdown became part of the fun,” added Shell. “Every day they were asking how many sleeps were left, and you could really see how much they were looking forward to it.”
When they arrived, they embraced everything the resort had to offer. They spent time in the arcades, cycled around the resort and enjoyed a variety of live shows. Meeting Peppa Pig, the bears and the Skyline Gang was another highlight, with plenty of smiles and photographs capturing the fun along the way.
Reflecting on the holiday, Shell said: “Seeing them laughing together and encouraging each other to try different activities was really special. They made the most of every minute.”
For John, the holiday was an experience he won’t forget. After returning home, he couldn’t stop talking about the caravan and riding the bikes, and he’s already looking forward to his next holiday.
Jamie also achieved something he was really proud of, confidently enjoying the live shows and activities and making the most of everything the day had to offer.
“Jamie amazed us,” said Shell. “The confidence he showed throughout the holiday was wonderful to see, and we were all incredibly proud of what he achieved.”
The success of the trip has already inspired plans for more shared adventures in the future.
“Seeing John and Jamie enjoy themselves so much reminded us why person-centred support is so important,” said Shell. “It wasn’t just about going on holiday; it was about creating opportunities, building confidence and creating experiences they'll both treasure."
For John and Jamie, this was more than just a holiday. It was another chapter in a friendship that continues to grow and the beginning of many more adventures to come.
