Christian Gets To Grips With Life Support Training

Praise has been heaped on Christian after he did an amazing job of joining in during a Swanton Basic Life Support session this winter.

Christian, who is supported at Milton House, was invited to join the practical section of the course by trainer Aimee Clancy, who thought he might enjoy learning life-saving skills.

Aimee was taking Swanton colleagues through their compulsory training and demonstrating CPR, abdominal thrusts and back blows.

After patiently observing the demonstration, Christian chose to have a go at doing chest compressions on the dummy before attempting the abdominal thrusts and back blows with Support Worker Louie.

Milton House’s Registered Manager, Darren Cross, said that Christian’s efforts were a fantastic achievement.

Darren said: “I was blown away by how brilliantly Christian did during the Basic Life Support Training, he has come so far.

“First of all, for Christian to go into a training room with so many people he didn’t know is really impressive, but for him to listen carefully and apply the teaching is incredible.

“It was Aimee’s idea to get him involved with the session - she is so great with the people we support and brilliant at what she does with our training.

“It’s hard to put into words how far Christian has come in the past few years to be able to participate like this.

“We’re all so proud of him.”

As well as taking big strides forward himself, Christian’s presence at the course had a profound impact on the care colleagues taking part.

Darren added: “Every year, we have to refresh our Basic Life Support skills, and not much tends to change in best practice each time.

“To have Christian in the session and to bring his energy and enthusiasm was fantastic for the Swanton staff there, he lifted the whole session.

“We’re all keen to get other people we support involved in training sessions so they can benefit from Aimee’s fantastic teaching.

“Our Scheme Manager Sarah Leach does an amazing job delivering the NAPPI training and she’s also hoping to invite Christian along to participate in one of her sessions too.
