On Friday 9th May 2025, colleagues and the people we support from Swanton Community Services Telford came together for a relaxed, joy-filled picnic in Telford Town Park—an event organised in the spirit of Mental Health Week (12th–18th May).
The idea was simple but meaningful: bring people together outdoors to enjoy each other’s company, connect with nature, and take time for their own wellbeing. The glorious weather added an extra layer of joy, creating the perfect setting for people to relax, walk, chat and share food together.
“Even for those without serious mental health conditions, spending time in nature can help ease feelings like loneliness or frustration,” Peripatetic Care Manager Zoe shared.
“It supports better sleep, creativity and cognitive function too. We wanted to offer that space for everyone—no pressure, just connection.”
People supported across our Telford services joined staff for a gentle afternoon of laughter, introductions, and a few unexpected adventures.
Mental Health First Aiders (MHFAs) were present and lots of meaningful conversations took place throughout the day.
“Mental health support isn’t just about solving problems—it’s also about helping people feel seen, appreciated and valued,” Zoe added.
“Some people shared really positive updates about their progress and how they’re feeling. It was great to be able to recognise that in the moment.”
A real highlight of the afternoon was the adapted bike, hired thanks to funds raised through the team’s Spring Raffle. Person we support John originally suggested the idea—and before long, everyone was giving it a go.
There was even a “high-speed chase” featuring Mitch and Team Leader Ant, while Nat and Terri raced behind in their wheelchairs. Staff and people we support cheered each other on, snapped photos, and relaxed on blankets between activities.
“It was such a good atmosphere—Shannon was amazing, going around introducing herself to everyone, showing real confidence. There was laughter, fun, and the kind of gentle community energy that really lifts people.”
Zoe highlighted how powerful these moments can be when it comes to raising awareness of mental health.
“Mental health is so often impacted by isolation. Bringing people together is one of the best ways we can help. If our staff feel supported and our community feels connected, we know we’re doing something right.”
Plans are already underway for more shared events—including the return of the Telford Beach Party this summer, the growth of the local Monday Club, and the launch of a new Diners Club.
A big thank you to Zoe and the team who helped make the day happen—and to everyone who came along and joined in.
