A Journey of Determination: Myline Qualifies as a Registered Nurse
Supporting colleagues to achieve their career aspirations is something we are passionate about at Swanton Care. Myline's journey from Bank Support Worker to Registered Nurse at Eden View is a fantastic example of what can be achieved through dedication, perseverance and a commitment to continuous learning.
Myline first qualified as a Registered General Nurse (RGN) in the Philippines in 1993 and began her nursing career working in the Intensive Care Unit at Mary Mediatrix Medical Centre. From the beginning, she had aspirations of building a career overseas.
"I was inspired to become a nurse because I wanted the opportunity to work abroad and continue developing my career," said Myline.
In 2006, she moved to the UK with hopes of continuing her nursing profession.
However, the path to becoming a registered nurse in the UK was not straightforward. Due to Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) registration requirements, Myline was unable to practise as a nurse immediately and faced a long journey involving additional examinations and assessments.
"I moved to the UK to continue my nursing career, but I needed to complete a number of additional exams and assessments before I could become a registered nurse in the UK," she explained. Despite the challenges, Myline never lost sight of her goal.
Myline joined Swanton Care as a Bank Support Worker in 2020, supporting people while continuing to pursue her ambition of becoming a registered nurse in the UK. She later stepped into the role of Care Home Assistant Practitioner (CHAP) at Eden View, enabling her to further develop her clinical skills while working towards Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) registration.
Reflecting on what attracted her to Eden View, Myline said: "I was attracted to Eden View because of the environment and the equipment used there. The set-up is similar to a hospital and you learn so many different things, which helped me build my knowledge and experience while working towards becoming a nurse in the UK."
While working at Eden View, Myline dedicated herself to preparing for the Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE), demonstrating remarkable self-discipline and determination.
"I worked during the day and after work I attended online classes for OSCE. If I woke up at 3am, I made sure that I read at least one hour of my study material."
She continued: "My days off were very important to me. I spent a lot of time in the library studying and preparing for my exams. There were times when I had to miss family gatherings and social occasions, but I knew it was all part of working towards my goal."
Behind every success story is often a strong support network, and Myline was grateful for the encouragement she received from Eden View's leadership team throughout her journey.
"I was really grateful for the support from Owen and Merry throughout my journey. They were very understanding and helped me where they could, whether that was allowing me to finish shifts early to attend online classes or helping me print my study materials."
She added: "At the time, only Owen and Merry knew that I was preparing for my OSCE. Having their support and encouragement gave me the confidence to keep going throughout the process."
After years of perseverance and dedication, Myline's hard work paid off when she received her nursing PIN in January 2026. In March 2026, she officially began her role as a Registered General Nurse at Eden View, achieving a goal she had worked towards for many years.
Reflecting on the moment she received confirmation of her registration, Myline said: "I was so happy. Even now, I still can't quite believe that I've achieved my goal of becoming a nurse in the UK." She added: "I believe that when it's your time to shine, no one can stop you."
Registered Manager Owen Booker has witnessed Myline's journey from CHAP to Registered Nurse and believes her achievement demonstrates what is possible when determination is matched with the right support.
"It has been really positive to see this journey. Progressing from Support Worker, or in this case CHAP, to Registered Nurse can be challenging because of the qualifications and registration requirements involved. Myline's achievement demonstrates that, with determination and the right support, colleagues can continue developing their careers and work towards becoming nurses whilst remaining part of the Eden View team."
Owen also highlighted the resilience and commitment Myline has shown throughout her journey.
"This has been a very long process for Myline, filled with obstacles and issues, but she has faced every challenge and overcome it. This journey has not been easy, but Myline has shown just how determined she was to achieve her goal. As a CHAP, there were times when she couldn't undertake some of the duties performed by registered nurses, which only strengthened her commitment to achieving her PIN and progressing her career."
Since becoming a Registered Nurse, Myline has already seen the positive impact her clinical knowledge and experience can have on the people we support.
"The most rewarding part of becoming a Registered Nurse at Eden View is knowing that my clinical knowledge, experience and quick actions can make a real difference to the people we support. In some situations, that can mean helping to prevent further deterioration and even saving lives."
Her nursing expertise helps her confidently support people with their healthcare needs and deliver high-quality, person-centred care every day.
"My nursing knowledge helps me to support people with their clinical needs and provide the best possible care," she said.
Owen believes supporting colleagues to achieve their ambitions is an important part of developing strong teams and delivering excellent care. "Supporting colleagues is paramount to aid development. It helps with retention and reduces the implications of having to hire new staff."
He added: "I think this is a fantastic example that with the right support, development is possible."
Myline's advice to anyone pursuing a long-term goal is simple but powerful: "Don't lose hope and pursue your dream no matter what. Your time will come."
Myline's story highlights the impact of hard work, resilience and a commitment to lifelong learning. From qualifying as a nurse in the Philippines to achieving her UK registration more than 30 years later, her journey is a powerful reminder that ambitions can be achieved with perseverance, determination and the right support.
