Empowering Voices Across Wales: People We Support Regional Forum Celebrates Inclusion and Ideas

The latest People We Support Regional Forum brought together people from across Swanton’s Welsh services for a brilliant day filled with ideas, laughter, and meaningful conversations.

Led by Regional Director Zena, the forum offered a welcoming, inclusive space where people could talk about what matters to them—from daily life and shared activities to future opportunities and aspirations.

The meeting began with updates from Phil, who recently represented Wales at Swanton’s National People We Support Forum—a company-wide event that connects representatives from every region to share experiences and ideas with each other and our Executive team. Phil reflected on how important it is for local voices to contribute to national conversations and help shape decisions at a broader level. The regional forum also plays a vital role in preparing for and informing the bi-annual National People We Support Forum, ensuring that the voices of people across Wales are represented and heard.

Joe also shared valuable feedback around accessibility and travel, sparking open discussion about how to make future forums even more inclusive. Ideas included holding sessions later in the day and offering optional overnight stays—small changes that could make a big difference.

The day was packed with creative energy. From snooker and pottery to live music and wildlife parks, people spoke enthusiastically about activities they love. There were also inspiring new suggestions: hairdressing workshops, sign language classes, and even a history talk on Guy Fawkes and Bonfire Night.

The group also reflected on their summer highlights—especially the success of Swantonbury Festival, which brought people together for a joyful celebration of music and friendship. Looking ahead, there’s growing excitement for the upcoming Learning Disability Conference in Swansea this November, themed “My Home Matters.”

Zena, Regional Director for Wales, shared: “These regional forums are about celebrating the voices of the people we support across Wales. Every idea and every bit of feedback helps us grow stronger as a community. It’s inspiring to see the creativity, warmth, and sense of togetherness that shines through each time we meet.”

“It’s a safe place where people can share experiences, speak up with confidence, and plan for the future. Over time, we’ve seen people grow in confidence, build friendships, and lead the conversation. It’s been truly moving to watch.”

One suggestion from the forum stood out in particular—a collective idea to mark the anniversary of the Aberfan disaster this October, reflecting the group’s growing interest in cultural heritage and their place in the wider community.

The forum ended with plenty of smiles, lots of dancing, and a shared enthusiasm for the months ahead. A huge thank you to everyone who attended, contributed, and brought such warmth and positivity to the day.

At Swanton, our goal is to be an organisation that truly lives its core purpose—supporting people to live their best lives, with choice, voice, and opportunity. The People We Support Forums are a vital part of that journey, and we can’t wait to see what’s next.
