April, who is supported by Swanton Community Services in Lancashire, recently took a big step forward by starting a voluntary role at Basically Cheer — and she’s absolutely thriving.
April already attended the community hub on Fridays and had become a familiar face among staff and other members. When the team at Basically Cheer mentioned they were looking for volunteers to help with tidying and kitchen support, April immediately expressed interest. She asked if she could begin volunteering on Tuesdays, after her regular “Coffee and Toast” afternoon at the same venue. Her enthusiasm and initiative really stood out — so her team adjusted the rota to help make it happen.
The evening before her first shift, staff supported April to talk through what to expect and what tasks she might be helping with. This gave her the confidence to step into her new role feeling prepared and excited. On the day, she followed her usual routine, completed her morning activities, and arrived at Basically Cheer in good spirits — ready to get stuck in.
April now helps out after the community lunch session by collecting cups and plates, washing up, wiping counters, sweeping and mopping, putting chairs and tables away, and hoovering the main area. She knows the layout well and completes her tasks with real focus and pride — all while growing in confidence each week.
“She settled into her role so quickly,” said Akila Scott, Team Leader. “Now she completes everything independently and shows real initiative. The team at Basically Cheer have been so welcoming and respectful — April feels like a valued part of it all.”
The team at Basically Cheer couldn’t agree more. Lianne, Managing Director, shared: “April is a fantastic member of our volunteering team. Nothing is ever too much trouble, and she is always happy to help in any way she can. We are so grateful for your help, April — thank you!”
After her first shift, April was proud of what she had achieved. She continues to enjoy the role, and it’s clear how much it means to her to contribute in such a positive way. Her motivation and independence have grown, and the structure of this new weekly routine adds something really meaningful to her week.
One of the most rewarding moments so far has been watching April complete all her tasks entirely on her own — no prompts, just purpose. “She arrives full of enthusiasm and always does a brilliant job,” said Akila. “You can see how much it means to her.”
April’s success doesn’t stop there. October was a month full of social moments and personal highlights. She enjoyed a Halloween party with friends, confidently taking part in group activities, and had a special trip to Jersey to visit her mum — a huge moment for her.
She’s now taking a short two-week break from volunteering to recharge after a busy spell, but she’s looking forward to returning to Basically Cheer very soon. Looking ahead, her team will continue supporting her to explore more community opportunities that reflect her interests and strengths.
“April’s story is a great example of what person-led support can achieve,” said Akila. “When someone has the chance to make their own choices and take part in their community in a way that’s meaningful to them, it can make such a difference. We’re incredibly proud of how far she’s come.”
