For Karen, who is supported by our Community Services in West Wales, going to college was about far more than starting a course. It was about following a passion, building confidence and proving to herself that she could achieve a goal she had dreamed about for a long time.
When Karen shared with the team that she wanted to study art at college, it marked the beginning of an exciting new chapter. Art had always been important to her, and the opportunity to develop her creativity, learn new skills and pursue something she felt passionate about represented a significant step towards greater confidence and independence.
Recognising how much this goal meant to Karen, the team worked alongside her to explore the different college and course options available. Together, they looked at entry requirements, discussed what each course involved and considered which opportunities best matched Karen's interests and aspirations. Although many courses required qualifications she did not yet have, the team encouraged Karen to keep believing in her goal until they found an opportunity that was right for her.
That opportunity came in the form of a 12-week Introduction to Art and Design course at Coleg Sir Gar. Designed for beginners, it gave Karen the chance to develop her creativity without needing previous qualifications and felt like the ideal starting point for her creative journey.
With encouragement and reassurance from the team, Karen took the lead by contacting the college herself to ask for more information. As she progressed through each stage of the enrolment process, staff were there to offer guidance, build her confidence and support her to make informed decisions, helping her take ownership of every milestone along the way

Kayleigh, Scheme Manager, said: "From the moment Karen shared her ambition, everyone wanted to support her in making it a reality. Our role was to encourage her, give her the confidence to take those next steps herself and be there whenever she needed reassurance. Watching her grow in confidence throughout the journey has been incredibly rewarding."
Karen attended her enrolment appointment with understandable nerves but also with courage and determination, knowing the team was there to support her every step of the way.
Preparing for the course became another exciting milestone. Karen went shopping for her art supplies and proudly chose the materials she would need for her projects. It was a meaningful moment, one that helped her feel prepared, organised and ready to begin life as a college student.
When the day finally arrived for Karen's first day at college, she set off with support staff by her side. She felt a mixture of excitement and nerves, but also a real sense of pride as she began working towards a goal she had set for herself.

Over the following 12 weeks, Karen embraced every opportunity the course offered. She explored different artistic techniques, completed creative projects and researched a range of artists as part of her homework, developing both her artistic skills and her confidence along the way.
Week by week, the team saw Karen become more willing to share her ideas, try new techniques and work more independently. The course not only strengthened her creativity but also helped her recognise what she could achieve when she believed in herself.
One of Karen's proudest achievements is the portfolio she created during the course. It reflects not only her creativity and commitment but also the confidence she developed throughout the experience, helping her successfully complete and pass the course.
Kayleigh added: "Karen should be incredibly proud of everything she has achieved. Passing the course is a fantastic achievement, but seeing her confidence, independence and belief in herself grow has been just as special. This experience has shown what can happen when someone is supported to pursue something they are truly passionate about."
Karen has now successfully passed her Introduction to Art and Design course at Coleg Sir Gar, marking an important milestone in her journey. Completing the course is a fantastic achievement and reflects the dedication, creativity and determination she has shown throughout the last 12 weeks.
By following her ambition, embracing new experiences and believing in herself, Karen has achieved something remarkable and taken another important step towards her future goals. Whether she chooses to continue her studies, explore new creative opportunities or simply enjoy her passion for art, she can look back on this achievement with pride.
Karen's journey is a wonderful example of the impact person-centred support can have when people are encouraged to pursue ambitions that are meaningful to them. By listening to what mattered most to Karen, providing encouragement, practical guidance and opportunities to grow, the team helped her turn a personal dream into reality while building confidence that will stay with her long after the course has finished.
