There was plenty to celebrate in our Community Services in West Wales as Hattie achieved a Merit in her piano exam after months of hard work, dedication and determination.
Hattie, who scored an impressive 79 out of 100, has been learning the piano since 2022 with her teacher, Emily Wheeler. Since then, she has progressed through her piano course while performing each year at the annual Nodau Bychain Christmas Concert, giving family members the opportunity to see just how far she has come.
Acting Scheme Manager Daisy said: “From the moment Hattie started learning the piano, she has shown real enthusiasm and commitment. She has embraced every opportunity to learn and has grown in confidence with every performance.”
Living with dyspraxia means activities involving fine motor skills and hand coordination can sometimes be more difficult and cause anxiety. However, Hattie remained focused on achieving her goal. Through regular morning and evening practice, alongside weekly piano lessons, she showed remarkable commitment as she prepared for her exam.
Daisy added: “Hattie worked incredibly hard for this result. She practised consistently, listened to feedback and kept going even when she found things difficult. Her determination has been inspiring to see.”
Music plays an important role in Hattie’s life. Whether she’s singing along to her favourite songs, taking part in karaoke or playing music at church, it brings her joy, supports her wellbeing and gives her the confidence to perform in front of others.
Despite all of her preparation, Hattie was convinced she hadn’t done as well as she’d hoped after the exam. She was therefore delighted when Tania, Support Worker and Hattie’s keyworker, shared the news that she had achieved a Merit. Knowing the official certificate would not arrive until after the summer holidays, Tania organised a special presentation with a personalised certificate, flowers and a congratulations card so Hattie’s achievement could be celebrated straight away.
In recognition of her determination and personal progress, Hattie was also presented with a Leaps and Bounds Award, celebrating the resilience, commitment and perseverance she has shown throughout her musical journey.
“This achievement is about so much more than passing an exam,” said Daisy. “It reflects Hattie’s resilience, determination and willingness to challenge herself. We’re all incredibly proud of everything she has achieved and the confidence she continues to build through her love of music.”
Now, Hattie is already looking ahead to her next musical goal as she begins working towards her next piano level.
