It’s been a brilliant start to 2025 for Hubert, who is making huge steps forward in his engagement and communication thanks to significant changes in his lifestyle.
For a long time, Hubert was struggling with digestive issues that often left him in discomfort, causing lots of unhappiness.
However, when his support team at Maes Y Rhydidd suggested switching to a gluten and lactose-free diet to see if that helped, Hubert started to see the difference.
Now, he’s taking control by shopping for the groceries that best suit his needs, and it’s changed the game for his social life, too.
Service Manager Julie Baker said: “We’re so proud of Hubert and the progress he’s made since he came to live here two years ago.
“He goes shopping at the supermarket for his lactose and gluten-free food, scans them all through at the checkout and then pays for them.
“Taking control of his shopping and food is a big achievement for Hubert, and now he’s feeling better, he’s able to do so much more socially.”
Hubert has been out and about in the local area, enjoying walks at Clydach Lakes, tending to animals at Swanton’s horticulture site, and bowling with friends.
He and Sara, who is also supported at Maes Y Rhydidd, regularly go bowling together. Sara is now leading a new initiative where they will invite other service users in the area to join them and have a meal out afterwards.
Julie added: “These bowling sessions have been so much fun for Hubert and Sara, and it’s amazing to think they’ll be able to welcome others to join them and socialise afterwards.
“Communication has been challenging for Hubert, as his first language is Polish and he uses both Polish and English, and another language that his dad jokingly calls ‘Huberish’!
“However, he’s doing so well in learning to communicate, and his engagement with us and others has significantly improved.
“We love seeing Hubert get the chance to enjoy his life and do so many great activities, which boost his happiness.
“It’s exciting to think where he might be this time next year, given how far he’s come in the past two.”
