“It only feels like yesterday that I started – now I’ve been here 20 years!”

It’s been 20 years since Maria Hrycia started a new job at Values In Care as a Support Worker. She had no idea that for the next two decades, her career would take her through so many different roles and experiences, all within the same company. Here, Maria, who is now an HR Advisor, reflects on her career longevity and what’s kept her in the Values In Care Family.

How does it feel to have clocked up 20 years at Values In Care?

Quite surreal, that’s almost half my life dedicated to Values In Care! It only feels like yesterday that I was starting my new life as a Support Worker at our Towyn Way service, and, back then, I never thought I’d make it through my first week. So, to have made it to 20 years feels like an achievement!

During the early part of your career, you helped to launch the new Green Gables service – which recently marked its 20th anniversary. What was it like to be part of that team?

The opening of Green Gables was an exciting and challenging time. It was my first experience of supporting and opening a service. The role allowed me to build on my personal experience, develop professional skills and also an understanding of the role of a Support Worker. I was part of the care team that led and supported the transition of the young people into the service. This opportunity made me realise I wanted to grow and develop professionally within the organisation.

How has your career evolved since those early days?

My journey started as a Support Worker, and then I moved into a Senior Support Worker role before becoming Deputy Manager at Ger Y Nant. Shortly after I took on the Deputy Manager position, I became the Registered Manager and did that role for 13 years. During that time, I was able to gain the skills, experience and qualifications required to develop and further my career.

What led you to take on a role in Human Resources?

I started to explore different roles and challenges, and, luckily enough, as the organisation expanded, so did the opportunities available. I was successful in securing a role within the HR department and I’ve been happily supporting Values In Care and the wider Swanton Care and Community family.

What’s kept you at Values In Care for 20 years?

First and foremost, it’s the people we support. I’ve also had the pleasure of working with dedicated and skilled colleagues, each team I managed was wonderful. I’ve also been given opportunities throughout my career and had the support of Values In Care to take them. My role in HR offers plenty of personal and professional career growth and development, so I’m looking forward to the future!
