JF, who’s supported by Swanton Community Services Hull, has recently started volunteering at a local shop — and he’s already making a big impression with his hard work, enthusiasm, and growing independence.
The opportunity came about after JF shared his long-held dream of having a job. “JF has always said he wanted to work,” shared Rebecca Thompson, Scheme Manager. “So our team had a chat with the local shop, and they were more than happy for him to come in and do some mini shifts.”
From the very first day, JF has embraced the experience with maturity and confidence. “He was super excited to get started,” said Rebecca. “He only needed to be shown the till once and picked it up straight away. He couldn’t wait to go back!”
During his weekly Tuesday shifts, JF has been learning valuable new skills — from operating the till and stocking shelves to chatting with customers and giving brilliant service with a smile. He’s taken it all in stride, showing focus, patience, and a great attitude.
“Everyone is super proud of JF,” said Rebecca. “He gives 100% and is always polite and well-mannered. He even tries to get a good night’s sleep before work to make sure he’s ready.”
It’s no surprise that JF’s confidence has soared since starting the role. “He’s so independent when using the till — he knows exactly what to do,” Rebecca added. “And seeing him stand behind the counter, just owning the space, has been such a proud moment for all of us.”
The shop staff and local customers have been incredibly welcoming, recognising JF’s hard work and commitment. They were excited to have him join — a true testament to how valued he is as part of the team.
Rebecca summed it up perfectly: “This shows exactly what ‘Every Moment Matters’ means. JF’s showing that with the right support and belief in yourself, anything is possible — and we’ll be right here cheering him on as he continues to thrive.”
Next up for JF? He’s excited about a potential house move that will give him more space and independence — setting the stage for even more milestones ahead.
