JW’s 30th birthday was marked with a joyful surprise celebration, as the team at Pen Y Coed organised a fantastic party to celebrate this important milestone.
The party was held at Fleur De Lys Community Centre, a welcoming and accessible venue chosen to ensure everyone could attend comfortably.
JW had no idea what was planned, and his reaction when he arrived showed just how much he enjoyed the surprise.
“It was a surprise party, and when JW walked in, he was all smiles,” said Deputy Manager Ashley. “As soon as the costumes came out, he was really happy and tried to get to them straight away.”
The team had arranged for some very special guests to attend. Ashley dressed as Stitch, Registered Manager Donna became Minnie Mouse, and Support Worker Mike transformed into Mickey Mouse — bringing excitement, laughter and plenty of dancing to the celebration.
“As soon as JW saw the Disney characters, he made sure to be the first to meet them,” Ashley explained. “He went straight over and spent most of the party dancing with them and enjoying himself.”
Friends and colleagues from across Swanton Care & Community South East Wales services, including Saer Coed, Swn Y Nant, Graig Llwyd, Fairview, Woodland Lodge, Towyn Way and others, came along to celebrate and be part of JW’s special day.
“Staff from other homes told us it was an amazing party and how much fun everyone had,” Ashley said. “It meant a lot to have everyone come together to celebrate JW.”
One of the most meaningful moments was when JW’s parents arrived to join the celebration.

“JW has a very close bond with his mum and dad,” Ashley shared. “He was extremely happy to see them when they arrived. Although JW is non-verbal, you could clearly see from his smiles and reactions how much it meant to him.”
The team at Pen Y Coed worked hard to make sure every detail reflected what JW enjoys. Team Leader Amy organised the cake, decorations, entertainment and costumes, while Carlie sourced the ideal venue.
Ashley also praised the dedication of the wider team, particularly as the event followed severe weather warnings.
“Team members showed incredible commitment,” Ashley said. “Some even volunteered to stay overnight at the service to make sure everyone was safe during the storm, and they still helped prepare the food and support the party going ahead.”
The atmosphere throughout the day was filled with laughter, music and dancing, with everyone enjoying the chance to celebrate together.
“You only turn 30 once,” Ashley added. “Everyone at Pen Y Coed wanted to make sure JW felt valued and had the best possible day.”
JW’s birthday celebration highlights the importance of person-centred care at Swanton Care, where supporting people to celebrate meaningful moments helps ensure they feel valued, respected and at the heart of everything we do.
A huge thank you and well done to all team members involved for their care, commitment and enthusiasm in making JW’s birthday such a happy and memorable occasion.
