Christmas came early across our Barnsley services this week, as Santa Claus, Mrs Claus and their trusty Elf Helper paid a special visit to five of our homes — delivering gifts, cards and plenty of festive cheer along the way.
The idea began with a simple conversation. Ceri, Shift Lead, shared that she had ordered a Mrs Claus outfit and planned a festive visit. When she mentioned it to Jenna, Support Worker, the idea quickly gathered momentum, with Jenna volunteering to join in as an elf. What started as a light-hearted plan soon turned into something much bigger.
“I shared the idea with Darren and the managers, team leaders and shift leads,” Ceri explained. “From there, it was suggested that we could include the other homes too — and that’s how it grew into a full day of visits.”
With Darren, Registered Manager, stepping into the role of Santa and Jenna as their trusted Elf, the team worked together to plan a route that covered all five services. Ceri coordinated closely with the wider team in the lead-up to make sure each home was included and the day ran smoothly.
Behind the scenes, care and thought went into choosing gifts that would feel meaningful. Each person we support received a Christmas card from the company along with their Christmas money and a selection box.
As Santa, Mrs Claus and Buddy the Elf arrived at each home, they were met with excitement, warmth and genuine joy.
“Walking into each home and seeing everyone’s reactions was just lovely,” Ceri said. “There was such excitement — it really made Christmas feel magical.”
Every interaction was memorable, but one moment stood out in particular. “One of the people we support touched my shoes and put their arm around me for a photograph,” Ceri shared. “I knew that was a big achievement for them, which made the moment even more special.”
Buddy the Elf was equally moved, sharing that Santa would need to make Christmas extra special this year after seeing just how kind and thoughtful everyone had been.
Events like this do more than spread festive cheer. They help build relationships across services, support positive experiences of change, and create moments of connection for everyone involved.
“It’s our mission to help make the lives of the people we support happier, included and accepted,” Ceri added. “I feel honoured to be part of their lives and to make a difference in any way I can.”
Feedback from staff has been overwhelmingly positive, with many commenting on the costumes, the atmosphere, and the joy it brought throughout the day.
The team hopes this will be the start of a festive tradition, with future visits shaped around the individual needs and preferences of the people we support.
A huge thank you to everyone involved for creating such a memorable and magical day.
