Duncan, a long-standing Support Worker at Swanton House, is braving the cold this November to take part in a sponsored sleep-out in Norwich — raising money for the incredible work of the Benjamin Foundation.
We caught up with Duncan ahead of the event to find out what inspired him to take part, and how he’s feeling as the big night approaches.
After many years supporting people at Swanton, Duncan was moved to act after seeing the number of young people facing homelessness on Norwich’s streets — and from supporting someone at Swanton who had previously experienced life without a home.
“It’s something I’ve always known about, and I thought — it’s finally time I did it,” Duncan said.
The sleep-out will take place right after Duncan finishes a full day at Swanton House, but the cause is more than worth the challenge.
“It’s all worthwhile for a good cause. I’m actually looking forward to it,” he shared. “I’ve set myself a £150 target but already raised nearly double that — it’s great to be able to help raise awareness of what the Benjamin Foundation do.”
Duncan added that family, friends, and work colleagues have been incredibly generous with their donations — showing their support and helping him surpass his fundraising goal.
This will be Duncan’s first sleep-out experience — and it hasn’t gone unnoticed at Swanton House, where both colleagues and the people he supports have had plenty to say.
“Some of them think I’m crazy!” Duncan laughed. “My wife even joked I should practise by sleeping in the shed — though I think she just wanted a break from my snoring!”
Swanton House Registered Manager Nigel shared his thoughts on Duncan’s decision to take part: “Duncan has a genuine drive to help others, and his commitment to this cause shows just how much he cares about people – both inside and outside of work. He’s always looking for ways to make a positive impact, and we’re all really proud to support him.”
Duncan is preparing for a cold and wet November night in Norwich — but with the warmth of a good cause keeping his spirits high.
Swanton Care are proud to make a £100 donation to Duncan’s fundraising efforts — a gesture that reflects our shared ethos of empathy, responsibility, and meaningful support for others.
A huge well done to Duncan for taking on such an important challenge and showing how the Swanton spirit extends far beyond the workplace.
