It was party time for Swanton services in the North East this April as the region got together at a colourful disco to mark Autism Awareness Day.
The events committee planned a vibrant event where party-goers were encouraged to celebrate their favourite colours.
As well as the fancy dress-themed disco, there was a tombola, a buffet spread and arts and crafts activities for everyone to enjoy.
There was karaoke and face painting for the people supported at the Swanton services, plus prizes were handed out for outfits, colouring and other achievements.
For Richard Ridley-Gurr, who was part of the event planning group, the party couldn’t have gone better.
Richard said: “The disco was the highlight of the month, and it felt amazing to have fun and raise some funds for Autism Awareness.
“Everyone had a great afternoon, including Dylan, who overcame his fears to go in drag to the party.
“He’s hoping to go to see Ru Paul’s Drag Race when the show is staged locally, so he wanted to have a practice run of getting dressed up.
“Not only did Dylan look amazing, but he collected the Best Dressed Person Award!”
The tombola was stacked with great prizes, including hair tongs, beauty products, cuddly toys and chocolate eggs.
The event raised over £100 for autism charities and was hailed a great success by those who attended.
Richard added: “It’s so important to bring services in our region together to share some fun and games.
“Seeing the people we support having such a good time, and knowing we are raising money for a good cause, is very satisfying.
“We’re already looking forward to the next Swanton North East get-together!”
