An exciting trip to the South Shields Coast Search and Rescue Station gave four people supported at Eastcliffe a day to remember.
Support Worker David Ratcliffe, a captain at the volunteer life brigade on the east coast, organised the visit.
It was thrilling for David, Jonathon, Paul and Robert to get inside the Search and Rescue station as the boys often walk past it on the promenade while visiting the marina.
During the December visit, David took them inside and showed them around.
David said: “I was delighted to be able to give the boys a proper tour of our Search and Rescue station.
“We had a good look at the emergency vehicle, and I showed them how it all works, plus they got to try on the safety jackets and helmets that we wear.
“It was a lot of fun, and I know one particular highlight was when we let them activate the emergency sirens and lights on our vehicle.”
Every year, dedicated volunteers save many lives by giving up their free time to serve the coastal community.
David said it meant a lot to share that part of his life with some of the people he supports.
He added: “It’s a privilege to serve with the South Shields Volunteer Life Brigade.
“To see the lads' interest was great, and I was proud to explain what we do here.
“The next time they walk past during a seaside day out, they’ll know exactly what is inside our station and why we do what we do.”
