An inspirational group of people from Swanton’s Telford services talked careers with people supported by a local charity to discuss inclusive working opportunities.
Peripatetic Care Manager Zoe Carter was accompanied by Locality Manager Susan Gibson, Team Leaders Sandra and Dawn, and Vernon, who is supported in Telford.
They met with a group from Landau, a West Midlands employment and training charity that helps people with additional needs into work.
During Swanton’s sessions, the Landau students were given an insight into the services provided across Telford, the career journey of a Registered Manager, and the role of a Support Worker.
The Support Worker conversation was followed up with an excellent talk from Vernon, who told the students about what he likes doing and the kinds of people he likes to be supported by.
Zoe said: “It was terrific to meet the students from Landau and talk to them about the work we do at Swanton.
“Support work is so varied and interesting, so we wanted to share with them a look at all the different things you get to do in your career in care.
“Having Vernon there to provide his perspective was incredibly important so they could understand how meaningful and valuable the work is for the people we support.”
Inclusivity is an important part of the Swanton ethos, and Landau’s work aims to break down the barriers to employment for people with additional needs.
During the event, the group discussed the many opportunities in the community and the career progression possible for people within Swanton.
Zoe added: “Sandra gave a terrific talk on how she became a team leader, delivered with the passion and boundless energy that makes her such a shining star.
“We hope we gave the Landau students a valuable insight into our work and where they could find opportunities for work within care.
“It was our aim to inform and inspire them, so hopefully, we’ll get a chance to continue those conversations going forward with more events.”
