Towyn Way Tiki Garden Transformation

At Towyn Way in Pontypridd, Wales, what began as a casual chat during a team meeting quickly blossomed into a full-blown garden makeover—bringing colour, creativity, and a real sense of connection to everyone involved.

The idea came from a shared goal: to make the garden more inviting and enjoyable for the people we support. After some team brainstorming, the decision was made to go with a tiki theme—bright, cheerful, and full of fun.

The garden was a standard space, with the trusty old shed mainly used for storage. But once the ideas started flowing, the team came together with energy and enthusiasm to bring the vision to life. They created a to-do list of everything needed, and everyone got stuck in—including the people we support, who loved being part of the project.

One of the standout features is the new Tiki Shack, created from that very same old shed. Now fully revamped with sensory lights, beach-style decorations, colourful paint, and comfy seating, it’s become a favourite spot to relax and unwind. The pergola was also given a Tiki-style makeover, complete with reed fencing, a new bar area, and a summer-ready vibe.

“It was a real team effort,” said Kaz, Registered Manager at Towyn Way. “Everyone brought their own skills and ideas to the table. Some staff even gave up their own time to help paint fences and shop for decorations. I was so proud, I nominated the team for a Swanton Care ‘Above and Beyond’ award.”

"The transformation came together just in time for the birthday of one of the people we support, Paul, making the celebration extra special. 'Paul spent most of the day in the garden—more than he ever had before,' Kaz shared. 'His family were amazed by the changes, especially the Tiki Shack.”

The impact has been felt across the whole home. Stevie, one of the people supported at Towyn Way, now regularly enjoys the calming atmosphere of the shack—spending time watching the lights, listening to music, and relaxing in his own space.

And there’s more to come. Plans are already underway to expand the garden further next spring with a sensory space, raised beds, and a water feature—offering even more opportunities for connection, stimulation, and enjoyment.

Looking back on the project, Kaz reflected: “The garden looks completely different now. It’s gone from a forgotten space to a place that’s full of life. Seeing the faces of the people we support enjoying what we’ve created—it makes everything worthwhile.”
